Phil Ehlke

My name is Phil Ehlke, and I am just beginning my 40th year of radio.

In one week my wife and I celebrate thirty-six years together. We have five adult kids and only one is married right now, and one grandson.

In addition to loving the Lord and my family, I love music, and I love our country.  Christian Radio was a blessing.

On our radio station, we promote family, great music, and expound on truths that we are learning from God’s word…and from other resources.  Over the years we have added programs like Breakpoint, and more recently the Janet Mefford Show.  This world is in desperate need of Truth.  Biblical Truth.  Not False Truth.  Pushing back the darkness every day!

There have always been tough issues to face…even in our lifetimes.  In the 60’s we faced the disintegration of the family and unfortunate changes in the church. There has clearly been a drift away from Biblical truth by a sizeable chunk.  The sexual revolution started years ago.  I remember “Abortion.” Many of these things just continue to get amplified in today’s culture. It’s exploding. And about 10 years ago, the Lord made it clear to us that he didn’t want QFM to just be a radio station that played good music and spoke of the positive aspects of living as a believer.  Those are indeed important.  But He asked us to be bold, and that we should speak truth.

Now if you’re thinking life has just been a cakewalk because I have this exciting career in Christian radio…well that would not be quite right.  I won’t bother you with a long list of my problems.  God has been faithful and honestly, I don’t have a lot to complain about compared to some.  But it’s been a tough season lately, and I know I’m not the only one.  Our five kids, 3 are daughters, and they all now live in California - one in LA, one in San Bernardino, and one in San Francisco.  And let’s just say we are feeling some of what Jesus talked about in Luke 12, where he said he didn’t come to bring unity, and there would be division in the family.

The great deceiver is working overtime.  As life has taken them to large west coast cities, the deceptive narrative being pushed is the idea that we here in the Midwest are living outdated, uninformed lives.  That the strong morals and values we still believe strongly in are actually false at best and most likely dangerous.  Take my oldest daughter for example who is incredibly smart.  So smart that she has figured out that her upbringing in the nurture and admonition of the Lord was false, and actually harmful to her.  The Bible is nothing but old stories.  And with science and enlightenment at her back, she has progressed beyond the old Midwest ideals.  And this scenario is playing out all over this country.  Maybe with some of you as well.  And by the way what is it about metro areas that foster this overwhelming desire to push out God and open hearts wide to progressive ideas and skepticism about God?  A brand new Gallup poll this week showed that of far-left progressives…2/3rds prefer city life.  For conservative, God-fearing citizens, 2/3rds prefer a small town or rural life.  One reason is clearly large secular universities in these cities.  And city dwellers looking to big-city governments to solve problems inherent to crowded places.  I’m sure there are many reasons, but the difference from city to rural is now massive.

2 Tim 3:1-7 are incredibly interesting, and it addresses this very thing.   2 Tim 4:4 adds a bit more too.  I can’t imagine a better explanation of where we are.  Even the part about women.  Women are amazing.  Smart, so capable…and very passionate.  Look at most of the most outspoken champions of the anti-God, hard left these days.  Its women.  And how did it happen?  Influenced by deceptive information on the internet coming right into their homes, plus experiences on college campuses across the country have amplified this as well.

How about Acts 17:21 describing the men of Athens.  Always spending time talking about and learning the latest in new ideas.  Much of which can be very deceptive.

I don’t have to tell you we are in a very dark season when it comes to our country and our culture.  That’s why we more than ever must be the light.  How do we power this light?  By reading our Bibles once a month, coming here once a month, praying a few times a week, listening to Christian radio on occasion.  I think we all know the answer to that.

One of my favorite passages of scripture lays it out pretty well of what we need to do.  Proverbs Chapter 2, verses 1-12.

Can we match the passion of learning of people like my daughter, whom I love dearly and pray for daily?  This word is a treasure.  Do we treat it like that?  Then you will find the fear of the Lord… (The proper respect and literal fear of becoming separated from God due to unrepented sin and unrighteousness)…and you will find the knowledge of God.

Is there anything more important than truly knowing God?  God as our Creator and Father.  God as the Son who gave His life for us and will rule and reign as our king for all eternity.  And God as the Holy Spirit, who will power our light for our years on this earth.  And help us live with wisdom and live out the fruits of the spirit.  Love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Paul instructs to not just have the spirit.  But WALK in the spirit.  Take action by the power of the spirit!  We all love this verse as well:

2 Timothy 2:15 states, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth!  Amen.  We have to take this to a new level!

So how do we assess where things are at on this earth right now and in the US?  We’re a bit disappointed.  We had a leader in President Trump over the past four years that shockingly stood strong for our values.  He had plenty of warts and issues in his past, but wow…strong economy, pro-life champion, excellent on appointing judges, religious liberty, and the whole drain the swamp thing.  He brought excitement for conservatism like we’ve never seen!!  And now he’s no longer president. COVID, George Floyd and BLM dented Trump’s armor.  It is unbelievable to look back at this past year.  Some say he had to lose to further expose the deep darkness.

But what about the church right now. We’re divided over love of country, mask or no mask, shut down or not, and how much do we focus on social justice.

Refine and Revive

So what do we do in the face of the darkness we now face!

If we are not pressing into God and His word like never before, we are going to miss out on seeing incredible things during this incredible time.

Jesus said in John 8:31 and 32.  If you abide or remain in my word you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free!

I am drawn to action verses in scripture.  We received a letter recently that cautioned us to not get too carried away on the air when we’re talking about what’s happening in our world right now.  The writer encouraged us to just inform our listeners that we should just Watch and Pray.  Well, we’re about to read some scripture that calls us to more.  Watch and pray is part of it…absolutely.  But there is no question in my mind we will be called to act as well.

Ephesians 5 verses 1-6 talk about “Walking in Love.”  Verses 8-14 talk about walking in Light, and verses 15-21 are about walking in wisdom.

This is a wonderful recipe for living as Christians right now.  Let’s add walking in Power and Authority as well.  Now Walking in Love, Light and Wisdom might sound a bit fluffy for us who want to be warriors as well.  But let’s actually read these verses.  Ephesians 5:1-21 Amazing verses.

Something else we MUST do right now.  Certainly as men who want to lead our families and communities in these tumultuous days.  Let’s look at 1 Thessalonians 5:1-22.  These are serious marching orders for us.

1Timothy 6:11-16 Prayer of Action is so good.  And then of course this passage:  2 Timothy 4:1-5.  Are we seeing how we must be prepared to get in this battle?  Well what battle is this?  Is this just another tumultuous time in the history of the world, or could this be something more.  Let’s take a look at Matthew 24: verses 7 – 13.  (Read)

My bible expounds on the meaning of the word endure as it’s used here.  It means to remain, to hold one’s ground.  Remaining steady in the face of adversity rather than fleeing it, persevering in faith despite trials.  This is an energetic word used here denoting active resistance to defeat, albeit with a calm and courageous demeanor.  Jesus resolute courage at the cross is described this way in Hebrews Chapter 12, where it says Jesus endured the cross.  But let’s back up to verse 8 - the beginning of sorrows.   Pretty hard to argue against the idea that this has now begun.  Especially when you put it together with other powerful things now in place like never before in history.  The nation of Israel, the power of technology, the brutal evil that now exists along with the blatant deception with everything from abortion to transgenderism.  I don’t think I have to go through the damage that has already been done in the first 17 days of this new administration.  I’m sure you know about the radical federalization of election laws being proposed, and the radical gun control legislation put forth just this past week - HR 127 (The censorship of conservative and Christian speech).  The proposed changes in what they want to teach children in our public schools…that in itself is shocking.  There has been nothing quite like this in the history of our country, and they have all the power right now.  We know that it’s good for us to be watchful of the times.  Let’s be men of Issachar instead of the men of Athens.  This may be the beginning of sorrows that Jesus referred to.

By the way, “Who is Jesus?  Who does the world say Jesus is?”  Jesus even asked His disciples this question.  I’m going to borrow from something I’ve watched a few times recently.  It was a short video from British Evangelist Israel Fallou.  He was responding to someone who described Jesus as someone who was a radical pacifist, someone who talked much about sin, was a radical pacifist, and preached tolerance.  Actually, Jesus talked about hell more than anyone in the Bible.  He talked about hell more than heaven and in fact described hell many times in vivid detail.

Luke 16:23   he described hell as a place of eternal torment.  Mark 9:43 he said it’s a place of unquenchable fire.  Mark 9:48 where worms do not die.  Matt 13:42 where people will gnash their teeth in anger and regret.  Luke 16:19-35   he says hell is a place to which there is no return and also a place of outer darkness.

He also referred to hell directly when he was talking about sin.  Matthew 23:33 speaking to the Pharisees he said How will you escape being condemned to hell.  Matthew 5:29 It’s better to lose one part of your body than to be thrown into hell.  Matt 11:20 he starts talking about unrepentant cities and how horrible it will be for them on judgment day.

Israel Fallou made an interesting comment.  He said many in the world, when they’re talking about Jesus will say this:  Jesus to Me is this. There is no such thing as Jesus to me.  There is just Jesus. Who he is as we are told from scripture.  Believe it or not.  When you say Jesus to me…it’s all about you.  You just believe in you.  This is another HUGE reason why we must read and know God’s Word.  Who is Jesus?  When asked, Peter said you are the Christ…the son of the Living God.  That’s a good answer and a good start.  Jesus is the Lamb of God.  But he is also the Lion of Judah.

Do I want America to be restored as a powerful beacon of freedom to the world?  Absolutely…and we must pray for that!  I love this country.  Our history is amazing, and the prospects of so much of our rich history being deleted by progressives is sickening.  But as we know from scripture…we are not saved for America.  We are saved for the Kingdom of Heaven!!  That will be infinitely better than any nation of this earth.

I heard something interesting recently on Jan Markel’s program, Olive Tree Ministries.  For many people in our nation who want nothing to do with God or His word, they are trying to make this nation their heaven, and they’re willing to try anything…Progressive ideas, Socialism to name a few.  For us who know God and believe what his word teaches.  Life for us right now is the closest thing to hell we will experience. Of course, we shine our light while we’re here…but heaven is coming!

Who are we right now?  Are we casual sideline believers?  Let’s just watch and pray.  Matthew 24: 29-31.  The words of Jesus describing His powerful return.

Let’s be spiritual warriors right now.  But let me remind you of this verse from Proverbs 16:32.  He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty warrior, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.  We must be winsome warriors!!  We’re going to get angry, but in your anger do not sin.

What is the only OFFENSIVE weapon we possess in a spiritual battle?  From Ephesians 6:17.  It’s the last piece of the armor of God.  Right after the helmet of salvation.  I like that too by the way.  Salvation can protect us from a death blow to the head.  Amen.  But the only OFFENSIVE weapon is next.  The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

We are worthless warriors without the Word of God firmly planted in our hearts and minds.

I could not be more serious guys.  If you are not feeling ready for spiritual battle, then devour the Word and get ready.  Gird your waist with truth, put on the breastplate of righteousness.  Is there something in your life that must be dealt with?  Repent.  We must repent.  Don’t wait.  The shield of Faith…Strengthen your faith by His word, do not forsake meeting together which will also bolster your faith.  Get rid of things in your life that waste time and may weaken your faith, like watching too much news.  And then know the helmet will protect you and the sword, the word, will help you as you battle.  (Ephesians 6)
