Michael Wilkerson

My name is Michael Wilkerson. I am a Registered Nurse at The Eye Institute of Texas in Dallas, the third busiest eye surgery center in America.  When I am not helping people see physically, I am busy helping people see spiritually. I am also a singer/song writer, and I have held various occupations throughout my life, including owning a business of raising and selling Ostriches and cattle.

My road to salvation

Let me tell you how I came to faith. We were attending a Baptist church when my mom’s mother talked my parents into attending her little country church called the Pentecostal Lighthouse in Bonham, Texas. Pastor Smith was a tall, slender elderly gentleman who lived next door to my mother’s brother.

I remember the youth in that church would gather around the altar and pray like they just didn’t care what anyone thought. Tears and snot would be running, and penned up hair would be falling down all around. Those people knew how to pray and touch heaven. That was enough to make an impression on anybody, especially me as a 7 year old boy.

The Pastor’s wife was my Sunday school teacher.   I remember when she would teach us object lessons using a flannel graph. I loved it.   She would make it as interesting as she would stick the characters on the board and talk about great Bible stories.

Whenever I would say a slang word like darn or shoot, she would say uhuh.   It wasn’t until I was years older that it dawned on me why she would say uhuh. It was because I didn’t know it was wrong to say those kinds of slang words.

The women in the church would grow their hair out real long and wear it all up in a bun. And, they would wear long puffy dresses with long sleeves so not to expose anything or make their curves obvious.   My parents would not allow me to attend children’s church nor would they allow me to be a distraction to other people while the pastor preached. They would either make me sit still beside them or let me play with my hot wheels on the floor under the pew.

And, back in that day, preachers preached hell, fire, and brimstone messages. I guess they thought they had to scare the hell out of you to keep you from going there.   And, it makes total sense. Why would anyone want to be found until they first realize they are lost? Or, why would anyone feel the need to repent and turn to God unless someone first shows them how they have broken the laws of God and as a result dammed their souls?

My pastor sure believed this way. I heard more about hell than I ever did about heaven. And one day, while I was lying on the floor playing with my hot wheels, listening to the pastor preach, I understood that if I didn’t repent of my sins and ask Jesus to come into my heart that I was going to hell.

I said what?! I came up out of there, walked across the aisle to where my grandmother was sitting, and I asked her to take me to the altar right then and now.   So, I could ask Jesus to forgive my sins and come into my heart.   I tell you He did and He is still in my heart today.   Praise God forevermore!

You see, about the time I moved to Bonham, I stole a cigarette ashtray from the Ben Franklin Store. I barely knew what a cigarette was, but I sure thought that was a pretty ashtray.   So, I hid it in the car under the seat. My mother found it, brought me back to the store and made me fess up.   And, when that preacher said I was going to hell for breaking God’s laws, suddenly I realized I was a sinner, for stealing that ashtray, lying about it, and dishonoring my parents. I had broken a bunch of God’s laws; surely hell was going to be hot for me. God had given me an understanding to know this.

At 7 years old, I was able to connect the dots from what I learned from the pastor’s sermons, what his wife taught me in Sunday school, what we sang from the hymnals, and what my parents taught me at home.   One day it all came together for me.

I consider it to be the greatest event in my life.  It was the day God opened my eyes to see the simple truth of the gospel. Finally, I understood the fact that breaking even one of the laws of God made me a sinner and disqualified me for heaven. And, I realized I was in need of a Savior.

I realized that I was no longer going to live forever with the people I love in a beautiful place called heaven, but I was going to spend an eternity in a devil’s hell. A place the pastor described, as he read from the pages of the Bible, as an outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, where the fire in not quenched, where the worm dies not, where the smoke of their torment ascends up forever and ever and they have no rest day nor night.

And, the preacher would say our only hope is Jesus Christ, as he would quote the words of Jesus saying: I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man can come to the father except through Me. And Acts 4:12 states, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

And, that church taught me my favorite scripture verse: John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth on Him (not Mohammed, not Buddha, nor any other name but whosoever believeth on him, Jesus Christ) should not perish but have everlasting life.

The Bible says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. And, the Bible says that God chose the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.   It was the Words of God the preacher used to bring me to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Mom was the prayer warrior and my brother was a pastor

When I was a young boy in Bonham, Texas my mother used to pray for hours every night. You could hear her wailing throughout the house. Jesus said, draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you. Well, my mom drew so close to God during that time in her life to where God used to show her things that happened in the lives of people she worked with at South West Pump where she worked in Bonham. They would say Peggy, how did you know that? And, God would show her what He was going to allow to happen to them if they did not repent.

One night, my brother and I were sleeping when my mom walks into our bedroom and says, "Boys get up, your Dad’s truck has broken down, and we need to help him. God had shown her in a vision exactly where he was. During that time, mom had great peace in her life. But, my dad started to complain how he wasn’t able to sleep due to her wailing at night, so she stopped, and so did that experience she had with God. She totally lost the closeness she had with God.

And although, she has sought the Lord all of her life, she was never able to regain what she had to such an extent. Let that be a lesson to all of us.

My brother became a pastor and I am a minister as well. That tells you that my parents did a pretty good job raising us, as we have both been serving the Lord all of our lives. My parents didn’t just drop us off at church, they attended church along with us and they lived a godly life in front of us as good examples. I can’t thank God enough for my loving parents. And, I am so blessed to still have them with me. I have a rich godly heritage that I wouldn’t trade for any amount of money. And, I have turned down many offers to do so.

In fact, on 4 different occasions, I received an invitation to sell my soul and join the so-called illuminati into the secret society. They promised to make me super rich and powerful and invited me to secret meetings with the Rockefellers. But, Jesus said if you gain the whole world and lose your soul what has it profited you. So, I chose rather to hold to the eternal riches I have in Christ.

Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

A few years before I became a truck driver, I was praying down at the altar at an Assembly of God church in Sulphur Springs, TX where my brother was Pastor. I had my hands raised and I asked God to touch me. Little did I know He was physically going to touch me.

All of a sudden, I felt crushing electricity from my elbows to my finger tips on both arms. I said Lord if you press any harder you’re going to crush my arms. I started speaking in tongues and received the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

New career as a truck driver

When I was 31, I moved to New York City where I met my wife, Jewel – also a Registered Nurse – and I brought the princess with me tonight. I met Jewel in the choir at Time Square Church in Manhattan where the late David Wilkerson was pastor. David Wilkerson was well known for the movie and the book Cross and the Switchblade and for the ministry of Teen Challenge.

Several of my relatives were truck drivers, and through them I learned how much truck drivers desperately needed God, so eventually I became a truck driver and drove an 18 wheeler as a missionary for 8.5 years. During that time, I shared the gospel with thousands of truck drivers across 48 states and Canada.

Most every truck has a CB where you can talk and listen to people miles away in any direction. And, many times every day for 8.5 years, I would wait until I was surrounded by a convoy of trucks then for two minutes I would share the gospel on the CB.

A lot of times, they would want to hear more, so I would ask them to turn their CB to a private channel and I would teach them the Bible sometimes for hours at a time as they would ask questions.

I had the whole Bible on CD and I would listen to it for hours every day, so I was full of it. And, some of those truck drivers thought I was full of it too.   As you can imagine, not everyone was interested in hearing the gospel. Most of the time, I received positive feedback, but sometimes they would give me a cussing, in fact; on two different occasions they literally tried to kill me.

One was hunting me down with a gun at a truck stop in South Dakota, and in New Jersey, another passed my truck in his rig and slammed on the brakes. Then, he got on the CB and told me his intension was to kill me.

After I became a truck driver, at first, I was nervous about preaching on the CB. But, I knew this is what God wanted me to do, so I forced myself to do it. And, did you know that when I would start to preach, that same crushing electricity would come on my arms from my elbows to the tips of my fingers. I sensed that it was God’s way of telling me that I’m with you, take courage.

This happened every time I would preach on the CB. And, it continued for weeks like this; then stopped. When it stopped, I sensed in my spirit that the Lord was telling me okay I am taking your training wheels off now. You got this.

One night, I was driving my 18 wheeler across Missouri while singing praises to the Lord. I was headed down a hill. At the end of the hill was an overpass and after the overpass a sharp curve. Another 18 wheeler passes me. And I thought surely he sees all the bright yellow signs warning that there is a sharp curve ahead and he will slow down. But, he didn’t slow down.

Once he realized it was too late, he locked up his brakes. When he did, the entire tandem of his trailer, all eight wheels and dual axels came out from under his trailer. The weight of his trailer pinched the tires as they came out. The tandem with all 8 wheels connected jumped up in the air and headed straight towards me.

At that time I was driving a cab-over truck. A cab-over does not have a long hood out in front of it like a conventional does. You are sitting in this big window on top of the engine instead of having the engine out in front of you. So, there was nothing to protect me but this big window.

And here comes 1600 pounds flying at me with force from the weight of his trailer. It would have killed me instantly on impact. But, all of a sudden it took a turn and changed directions 90 degrees as if an invisible force hit it and knocked it 30 yards out of the way and off the highway.

And, that is probably what saved him from driving off the cliff as the weight of his trailer dug into the ground and stopped his truck.   That was a miracle that saved both of us and it happened right in front of my eyes.

Maybe you are here tonight and your life is going downhill. I pray that while I share my testimony that God will use something I say that will touch your heart and that invisible force will knock you off your course and get you going in the right direction. And, it’s not by chance that we are all here today.

The Bible says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. After driving a truck for years and listening to the Bible on CD for hours every day, my faith increased. I began to understand more about what Jesus meant when He said, “He that believes on Me the works that I do shall he do also and greater works than these shall he do because I go to the Father. “

What works did Jesus do? The Bible says He lived without sin, loved everyone, raised the dead, cast out devils, healed the sick, taught and made disciples. And, He said anyone who believes on Him, including you and me, would be able to do the same things He did.

And, Jesus said these signs shall follow them that believe in My name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them, they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. And, Jesus said, whatsoever you ask in My name that will I do that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

I started to see miracles

When my oldest daughters’ feet started growing to where her feet were pointing towards each other, I prayed and she was healed. When my youngest daughter developed the signs of lymphoma cancer, I prayed and she was healed. When the Doctor told my wife she needed to have surgery for what appeared to be cancer developing, I prayed and she was healed. When I developed an internal bleeding, to the point I was pale and weak and almost collapsed in the floor, I prayed and I was healed.

When I had a severe tooth ache and my jaw swelled up, I prayed and I was healed. When I rolled in the floor with pain in my side in the area of my gall bladder, I prayed and I was healed. When I rolled in the floor with pain in my back with symptoms of a kidney stone, I prayed and I was healed. Each time I received a miracle answer from God without any medical treatment, when everyone was telling me I was crazy and that I should seek a physician, and even when the symptoms seemed to be worsening after I prayed.

I risked my life many times for refusing medical treatment. I simply held on to God’s promises, and each time I received a miracle. And, it didn’t cost me anything but pain as I waited for the manifestation of the results of my prayers.

Why did I do that? Because Jesus said the thief being the Devil comes not but to steal, kill, and to destroy. But, He said I came that you might have life and have it more abundantly. And, the Bible says the Devil is a quitter. It says submit yourself to God, resist the Devil and he shall flee from you. So, whenever the Devil gives me pain, I tell him the Bible says you are a quitter. I will fight you to the death, so you might as well quit now. Because, you know I am going to stand on God’s promises until I see the results of my believing.

The Bible says pray with thanksgiving. That means after you pray begin to thank God for answering prayer even when you don’t see the results yet. The Bible says clap your hands all ye people shout unto God with a voice of triumph. So, that’s what I do. I simply act like God answered my prayer when I pray and then I just stand on His promises until I see results. This is what the Bible teaches.

I tell the Devil, don’t mess with me. I have been authorized and deputized to blow you clean away.   Jesus said if we believe in Him, we could do the same things He did, so one time I cast a demon spirit out of a room for waking me up. And I could feel its presence. After I rebuked it and commanded it to leave in Jesus name, the door opened on its own and I felt that spirit leave. And I told the demon don’t let the door hit you in the behind on the way out.

I was over at that same person’s house another time when I saw a face of a skull appear on the wall beside the light switch in the bathroom. Three other people saw it, including my wife. Because, I asked them to come look at it to make sure I wasn’t just seeing things. After they left the bathroom, I pointed my finger at it and said, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus. Immediately, it started fading in and out and disappeared. Come to find out, one of the residents was into pornography which will open a gateway to hell in your house.

You don’t want to mess with God by breaking His laws, because He will sick demons on you. They can bring a curse of sickness and disease or even death if you refuse to repent. The Bible says an evil spirit from the Lord was sent to torment King Saul. That means God sent the King of Israel at that time a demon to torment him. Demons are merely God’s spiritual police force.

They mean to hurt you, but what the Devil means for evil God uses for our good to get our attention. C.S. Lewis said, “God whispers to us in our pleasures but shouts in our pains. And, thank God demons can’t do anything without God’s permission.”

And, Matthew 12:22 says: All things you ask in prayer believing you shall receive. I see that promise as a blank check. Whenever I need it, I just fill it in and tell God whatever I need. Then, I simply hold on to His promise and act like He has already answered prayer. This is the secret to getting your prayers answered.

Jesus said when you pray, that means at the moment you pray, believe you have already received and you shall have it. And, the Bible says pray with thanksgiving. That means after you finish praying, begin to thank God for answering your prayer. In other words fake it till you make it. This is how you activate your faith. Faith is a verb; it’s an action word. The Bible says faith without works is dead. The secret to getting your prayers answered is you must act like God has already answered. God wants to see your faith.

Tonight you have heard scriptures from the Holy Bible, the infallible Word of the Living God expounded by another preacher, even me. And, if you feel the Holy Spirit of God tugging on your heart to make a decision for Christ tonight consider yourself to be the luckiest person alive. Because the salvation that Jesus offers is for everyone.

The Bible says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. That means sin has disqualified every soul on earth and entrance into heaven. Thus, we were all damned to hell. And, only those who make Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior will escape that awful place.

God created you because He didn’t want to live without you. And, He has a place for you in the kingdom of God.

John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whosever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

We used to sing a song in that little country church where I got saved that goes like this:

Whosever surely meaneth me, surely meaneth me, oh surely meaneth me, whosoever surely me, whosoever meaneth me.

And, it means salvation is for you, and you, and anyone else whose heart the Holy Spirit would convict today.   Anyone that can say I am a sinner in need of saving grace. I too would like God to forgive me of my sins, come into my heart, adopt me into the family of God, give me eternal life, and fill me with His Holy Spirit and give me the power to live the rest of my life for God.

Acts 2:38 says – 38 “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

To repent simply means okay God I realize I am going the wrong way. Now please come into my life and help me go the right way.

If there is anyone here that feels compelled to do that tonight or if you just want to make sure you are saved or want to rededicate your life to Christ, please come forward so the ministry team can pray with you.

Thank you for listening. God bless each and every one of you.
