Drew Schlagel

I grew up in a Christian home, and gave my life to the Lord when I was seven years old.  During elementary school, I told lots of my friends about Jesus.

A few even gave their life to the Lord.  When my family moved from our home in Lawrence, KS to Frisco, TX, my whole life changed.  I attended a public school, which was a culture shock for me.  Up until then, I had been going to a private school.  I didn’t fit in, and kids made fun of me because I didn’t wear the name brand clothes, or Nike air shoes.  I was picked on a lot.  I still told people about Jesus, but lost some of my friends as a result.  The fire in me began to dwindle, because of the rejection I was facing.  I slowly told less people about Jesus.

In ninth grade, I failed my hearing test.  The nurse said I was probably stuffed up and should come in again later.  When I came again, the same thing happened.  She recommended that I go to an audiologist, someone who specializes in the ear.  When I went, I found out that I had about thirty percent hearing loss in both ears.  They said it was not from loud noise, but probably hereditary.  They put me in preferential seating in school, and said I should consider getting a hearing aid.  One thing is for sure, I was not going to get a hearing aid!

In school I was treated differently, and the teacher practically yelled at me, thinking I could not hear her.  Despite this, I concealed my problem rather well, and very few people knew of my disability.  As time progressed though, it became more difficult to hear and I suffered depression as a result.  My dreams of becoming a pilot had gone out the window, I began to lack motivation in school, and my grades began to suffer as a result.  I began to question if God was really real?  Why was He allowing this to happen to me?  I said “God if you’re real, show me!”

In the summer of 2003, He did.   I went to Youth for the Nations, a summer camp at Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas, TX.  There I was exposed to the gifts of the Spirit, speaking in tongues, and other manifestations.  I was introduced to “the Baptism of the Holy Spirit,” which I asked my youth pastor about.

Later that year I rededicated my life to the Lord.  I was 16 years old.  The next year, I went again and I decided I wanted this “Baptism of the Holy Spirit.”  I went up for prayer and a young man came and laid his hands on me, and prayed for me to receive the Holy Spirit.  After he prayed he said “You got it!”  I looked at him, with an expression like “really?”

Then for the first time in my life I felt the tangible presence of God all around me.  It felt as though someone were hugging me, embracing me.  It was the most wonderful feeling in the world!  I also felt a breeze in the sanctuary.

From that point on, my life has never been the same.   The Lord began to give me prophetic dreams and visions, I began to fast and pray, and seek God more than ever before!  After visiting several universities, I asked the Lord, “Where do you want me to go?”   He showed me in a vision, it was Texas A&M-Commerce.  My freshmen year I played lead guitar for Chi-Alpha, and my junior and senior year I led worship for Lift Student Ministries.  All the while, I was still hard of hearing.  Then in June of 2008, I decided I was going to get a hearing aid.  I was tired of not being able to hear.  One night, I was praying and God said “You will be healed on Sunday.”  That was on Monday.  On July 27, 2008 I was completely healed from hearing loss and asthma!

Surprisingly, I didn’t speak in tongues until July 4, 2009.  At first it was just one word.  As time progressed, I received more.  In February of 2010, God called me to the ministry.  Today I’m working with a church in Commerce, TX where I lead worship, and preach for a college and young adult ministry.  God has been so good to me!  If you seek Him, you will find Him.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah. 29:13
