Allan Jones

I grew up in a small coal-mining village, surrounded by farmland, in north-west England.

My father worked on the railway and we had what could best be called a humble lifestyle.

At school I learned to play rugby; a rough, tough game, that helped me develop macho pride. Later, I took up drinking, gambling and swearing, so common around the sport.

After completing my education, I started work as a research physicist in a glass-making firm. I was doing some research that required me to work all through the night on one occasion, taking temperature and pressure readings on a furnace. Though poisonous gas was leaking from a broken pipe, I had no way of detecting the odourless substance, and as I continued to inhale the gas, eventually, I collapsed unconscious on the floor. Thankfully, a man was walking past the building and looked inside. He saw me lying on the floor, and phoned the security services. I was rushed into the hospital and was under oxygen for about five hours. The doctor told me later that I nearly died.

Death! The thought of it had troubled me from a young age, especially after two friends had died, one from drowning, and the other in a motorcycle accident. My fear of death increased after being in the hospital.

When I was twenty three years old I married Norma. Even though we didn’t know the Lord, we thank Him for bringing us together, and we have now been married for fifty-four years.

When we learned that she was expecting twins the year after our wedding we were overjoyed, but joy quickly turned to sorrow. Twin girls were born prematurely and only lived for two days.

I attended the funeral on my own, and as I looked at their coffin, familiar fear returned. I felt as if I was in a dark cloud, and was literally shaking. “Why did they only live for two days?” I thought. “What purpose was there for them being born?” Then I thought, “What happens when I die, and am put in a box, and then buried in the ground? The body is buried, but where does the real person go, who lives inside the body?”

Those feelings intensified sixteen months later when Norma’s twin brother died in his sleep. He was only twenty four years old.

Two weeks after this tragedy our daughter Christina was born.

By this time I had left my job in industry and was teaching physics, general science, mathematics and sport at a high school.

I considered myself to be a Christian having attended church from a young age. I believed in God, but I didn’t know Him. I did many wrong things in my life.

One day, Peter, a representative from an electronics firm, came to the school where I taught to sell me some equipment. He talked to me about Jesus. As we talked that afternoon, Peter asked me, “Where are you going for holidays this summer?” I replied, “Nowhere, since my wife is expecting a baby. The doctor said it could be twins, and we have already lost twins.” “We will pray for you,” he said. That caught my attention. “Do you really believe in prayer?” “Yes”, he replied. “We have seen God do many things in answer to prayer.”

Continuing, he talked about Christ and my fate. “You are a sinner and deserve to go to Hell”, he said, “But Jesus came from Heaven and died on the Cross to take the punishment for your sins. He arose from the dead, and one day, very soon, He will return for all those who have put their trust in Him. You need to repent of your sins and invite Jesus into your life.”

Two weeks later I received a letter from Peter. In it he said, “God is doing wonderful things in our church. Come and see!” I said to Norma, “I would like to visit this church, but it may be a strange sect. They might have strange ceremonies, and I might not get out again, so I will take a friend with me for safety.” Shortly after, I visited the church, with a friend, and received a very warm welcome. I was surprised to see so many happy people. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the meeting. When I got home, I said to Norma, “I have met some real Christians”, and she replied, “”Don’t be stupid! We are real Christians. We have gone to church from being small children.”

I visited the church again, and when I got home, I said to Norma, “They have been preaching about heaven and hell.” She said, “There is no such place as hell! We are all going to heaven!” She looked in a Bible to prove to me that there is no hell, and found that Jesus talked about the kingdom of darkness, and about hell.”

Not long after that, Norma came with me to the church. We met people who loved Jesus.

After the meeting we went to Peter’s home, with some other people from the church, and they shared testimonies of what God had done in their lives.

Driving home that night as I approached a bend in the road, a car suddenly pulled out from behind a bus. I saw the headlights heading straight for my car. There was nowhere to pull off at the side of the road. Jamming my foot on the brake, I closed my eyes and waited for the crash. Nothing happened! I opened my eyes. The bus and car had gone. As I sat there shaking, I heard a voice that asked, “Where will you spend eternity?” I believe it was the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that if I had died then I would have been lost for ever.

As soon as I arrived home, the phone rang. It was Peter. He said, “What happened to you on the way home tonight? Someone had a vision of headlights of a car heading straight for your car, and we prayed for you." After I put the phone down, I fell to my knees. “Jesus, I prayed. I am sorry for the way I have lived”, I prayed. “I repent of all my sins, Please forgive me and come into my heart and life.”

As I stood up, it felt like pure water flowing through my body, washing all my sins and fears away. I knew then that I was a child of God, and for the first time in my life I felt free.

Not long after, I was baptised by immersion, and then I was baptised with the Holy Spirit, and experience that equipped me for the work God had planned for me to do. After that experience, I started to see God healing people, sometimes whilst I was speaking. Norma also became a Christian. We discovered how much Jesus loved and cared for us, and that He was interested in every aspect of our lives.

I was invited to become a member of the FGBMFI, in the first Chapter that was formed in the UK, and later became the President of that Chapter.

I began thinking that I should go to Bible College, and some other men encouraged me to go to College and train to be a Pastor. I had an interview at London Bible College, was accepted to do a diploma in Theology, and planned to start later in the year. I continued in my teaching job, and one morning as I was leaving home to go to work, I heard the Lord’s voice. He said, “I don’t want you to go to Bible College, but leave the job where you are.”

I thought, “That is a very big decision.”  I said, “Lord, are You sure?” He said, “Do you trust Me?” I answered, “Yes, Lord”. It meant giving up a very good salary, and at that time we had two children, a house to pay for, and all the usual bills. I shared it with Norma, and she agreed that I should write my resignation. It was wonderful that she had the faith to believe that the Lord would take care of us and provide for us.

So, I left my employment, not knowing what I was going to do. Norma and I started living by the promises of the Word of God – promises such as, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want”, and “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

For two years we saw God provide for us in amazing ways.

One day a man and his wife walked four miles, with two little children to see us. They were having problems in their marriage and wanted some counsel. After talking for some time, I went to get something from another room, and God spoke to me. He said, “These people have nothing to eat today. Take them for a meal.” I Said, “Where do I take them?” He gave me the name of one of the most expensive restaurants. I said, “Are you sure, Lord? I have no salary now.” I said, “If we can find baby-sitters for their children and our children and if there is a table free at 6.30pm, I will take them.” We found baby-sitters, and when I phoned the restaurant, they said that they would reserve a table for 6.30pm. On the way to the restaurant, I said them, “You can have whatever you want,” not realising what I had said. When we arrived at the restaurant it was full of people. I looked at the menu, and I looked at the prices, and wondered, “What are they going to order? I have told them that they can have whatever they want. How am I going to pay for it.” I looked round the restaurant, and at the far end of the room there was a man and wife who sometimes came to the church I attended. They saw me and waved to me. As they were leaving, the husband came over to me. He said, “It is good to see you again”. He shook my hand, and as he did, he put something in my hand, and said, “That is to pay for your meals.” Praise God!!

We saw God’s provision like that at many times.

After two years, I said to the Lord, “What do You want me to do with my life?”

I was invited to a FGBMFI Conference in Braunschweig, Germany. I booked a ticket to go, and then two days before leaving for the Conventiom, I received a phone call to tell me that the cost of travel had increased by £30. I said, “I don’t have that, but will pray about it.” I took my Bible to pray, and I said, “Lord, I thought that You wanted me to go to Germany. I have bought my ticket, but I don’t have that £30. If You want me to go, You will have to provide that £30”. I opened my Bible to read, and there inside my Bible was £30 in cash! So, I went to Germany, and there I was prophesied over, and was told, “I want you to work full time for Me in this Fellowship, establishing Chapters, and encouraging men, and as you do this work I will supply your needs in a miraculous way, and you are in the centre of My will.” I was very excited by this. When I arrived home, there was a letter waiting for me, offering me a very good job, with a high salary, and everything I could want materially. God said, “What will you choose?- that job, or to follow Me.” I said, “I choose to follow You, Lord.”

That is what I have been doing now for about 40 years. I have not received any salary during that time. We have trusted the Lord, and He has been faithful.

I made a promise to God. I said, “I will go to the ends of the earth to tell one person about Jesus”. He took me to a place called North Pole, Alaska, and there one person gave their life to the Lord. God said, “Do you remember the promise that you made to me? I said, “Yes, Lord.” Since then I have travelled to over 80 Countries, and have seen God do so many marvellous works. I have seen blind eyes and deaf ears opened, cancers disappear, and many other types of healings. After I prayed, women who couldn’t have children have given birth. I have many photographs of babies from parents who had been told that they could not have children. I prayed for one lady in my own town who couldn’t have children.

I met her recently, and she said, “Do you remember praying for me when it was impossible for me to have children.” I said, “Yes.” She said, “Now I have ten children!!” Praise God!!

I serve a wonderful, powerful, miracle-working God. Now I know Him, I no longer fear death.

He has given me eternal life, and one day I know I will be with Him in Heaven.
