LEADERS - DO YOU INSPIRE FANS OR FOLLOWERS? DO YOU INVITE ADMIRERS OR INVESTORS?

“It’s easy to gather a gaggle of people who are entertained by your self destruction. People will whip out a cell phone in seconds if you set yourself on fire in the street. You will create an instant fan base and tons of notoriety. But ask them to set themselves on fire with you and watch them run away. Those are fans not followers. You have become a spectacle not a leader.” J Loren Norris

THERE’S ALWAYS A PRICE TO PAY

Very few leaders accomplish the level of influence they desire. Not because they don’t try hard enough, not because they don’t have the expertise to lead, not because they do not reach the crowds with sufficient marketing or awareness. No they fail to reach the level of influence they are seeking because they “sell an invitation” which does not clearly explain the “investment required to follow.”

Sure, the pricing is clear, fair, well researched and sufficiently justified. The financial expectations are documented and likely even come with a 30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. But the cost of following is generally hidden in the transition. Deeply disguised by the required transformation, the true cost of being a follower who will one day lead where they have been lead is immensely immeasurable and often unknown at the time of commitment.

THE REAL COST OF FOLLOWING

A leader who is not clear about the cost themselves cannot articulate the cost a follower should expect to pay. The “Law of The Sacrifice” according to John Maxwell, says one must be willing to give up to go up. He goes on to explain that each level of GOING UP demands more GIVING UP. The sacrifices are larger, the expenses higher, the risk more enormous, the effort, energy and commitment more daunting for every level of achievement.

The influencer who is nothing more than a “fan base builder” does not understand this. Perhaps they have generated significant numbers, in client counts, bank accounts and accolades. Perhaps they have even made other people famous or wealthy “fan base builders” as well. Perhaps they have even crafted a spectacular origin story of rags to riches for those who will be moved and motivated by the emotional hope (or hype) for their own potential success story. But if they have not had to count the cost of sacrifice which comes with transforming yourself into someone worthy of imitating and emulating in every area of life, then they are spectacles, not leaders.

TOUGH QUESTIONS

·         Are you simply an influencer who has gained much acclaim?

·         Are you a fan base builder whose measure of value rests solely in the engagement of your online audience and the size of your mailing list?

·         Are you a leader who has paid the emotional, relational, financial and social cost of deep and intentional self reflection to discover your truest calling?

·         Are you able to articulate that calling with a vision so compelling others are not JUST lining up to give you their money and their testimonials, but are clamoring to lay aside everything and transform themselves as well?

Imagine the “fans” Mandela, Churchill, Ghandi, Buddha, Jesus or Mohammed would have collected if they lived in the days of Twitter... contrast that with those who imitate and emulate them now. Those who still sacrifice everything to imitate these leaders, do so because the CAUGHT THE VISION of the leader. Is your vision that contagious? If not, start now!
