John Emmett Schmook

I became an adopted son to John E. Schmook at a FGBMFI Oklahoma City Regional Conference in 1992. I had never had a Father’s Blessing until that Saturday afternoon. I gave John permission to stand in for my deceased biological father, and he prayed a father’s blessing over me.

Spiritual Gifts:

Prophecy: We were ministering in Yerevan, Armenia. About 400 people lined up. John prophesized over each person and gave them a verse from the Amplified Bible. Pastors said that the prophecies of exhortation were accurate and the interpreters were hard pressed to keep up.

Interpretation of tongues: Even with poor hearing in Dad’s later life, the Holy Spirit would give John the interpretation in English and he would make it public.

The gifts of healing: In May of 2000 both Texans and Oklahomans worked together in praying for the sick in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. John was one of the leaders of the hospital team. They entered a clinic which had about 400 patients. The doctor was out. They asked the head nurse for permission to pray for the patients and she granted permission. Every patient was prayed for. When the doctor returned to the clinic, he asked the head nurse, “Where were all the patients.” She said, “The Full Gospel Businessmen prayed for the patients and they were all healed by God and they went home.

Dad mentored a new Christian (four days old) by the name of Jim. Jim was standing over a dead man on a gurney. He started praying in tongues and said, “Oh, that’s what I am supposed to pray.” The man who was dead for 20 minutes got up and walked home.

Dad’s passion was jail ministry. God gave Dad hundreds of parables to explain scripture. We would minister up to 24 people at a time. As men received Jesus as Savior, Dad would lead them in a song – Jesus Loves Me. After the second verse, he would sing in tongues, and return to English, and back to tongues. Many inmates were baptized in the Holy Spirit by singing this little song.

Dad and I gave free business seminars to the citizens of Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia at an Assembly of God Church. Many men and women would pray to receive Jesus while in class. The pastor also allowed us to minister in the church. After two days, the pastor allowed us to continue to minister and he went on vacation.

We will miss John, but he is now working for the Father in heaven.

   Spiritual Gift of Exhortation

The gift of exhortation is often called the “gift of encouragement.”  The Greek word for this gift is Parakaleo. It means to beseech, exhort, call upon, to encourage and to strengthen.  The primary means of exhortation is to remind the hearer of the powerful and amazing work of God in Christ, particularly in regard to the saving work of Jesus in the atonement.  We see Paul commanding Titus to use this gift in Titus 1:9 and throughout chapter 2, particularly Titus 2:11-15.  He also charges Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2.

The Spirit of God gives this gift to people in the church to strengthen and encourage those who are wavering in their faith.  Those with the gift of exhortation can uplift and motivate others as well as challenge and rebuke them in order to foster spiritual growth and action.  The goal of the encourager is to see everyone in the church continually building up the body of Christ and glorifying God.
